When you became a lawyer or legal professional, it was probably because you believed in fairness and justice and wanted to change the world for the better, or you were attracted by the big salary and lifestyle possibilities, or it was part of a family tradition, or maybe a combination of the above.

But, unless your parents were in the law, you had very little understanding of what the legal world really was about or what it entailed.

THE REALITY?

Life in the legal profession is tough. It’s a challenging job with long hours, complicated work and demanding clients, in a work environment that isn’t always the friendliest. Making personal plans feels impossible at times and so much gets sacrificed as a result of work.

If you had known this from the start, would you have been prepared to make these sacrifices?
Or would you at least have tried to do things differently?

These are the questions I asked myself 7 years ago.

Nothing about my life felt balanced and I felt incapable of creating any positive change.
I was the archetypal workaholic: driven, dependable and dedicated to my working world.
But I ignored all the underlying problems in my personal life.

MAYBE YOU FEEL THE SAME WAY?

  • You spend so much time stressing about work, you’re exhausted.
  • Your personal life is almost non-existent.
  • You dream of exercising but can’t seem to pull yourself away from your desk.
  • You wish you had the time to meet a life partner but only ever seem to meet people in the office.
  • Maybe you feel so anxious all the time and struggle to stand up for yourself at work.
  • You are frustrated with yourself because you don’t feel you can ask for what you deserve (e.g. a pay rise).
  • You’ve forgotten what it is that you love about your job.
  • You are not sure if you even want to be a lawyer anymore.

It’s not that I didn’t see the imbalance. But because I had lived this lifestyle for so long – putting work before everything else – I was scared to change the status quo. I feared losing what I had in search of something that I might get.

Eventually, my desire for change grew stronger than my fear.

I finally understood that while the cycle of hard work was feeding my deep-rooted need to be praised, loved and validated, it left me starving for happiness and health. Something had to change. I didn’t want to be in the same place (or worse) in five years’ time.

So, I stepped into the unknown…one baby step at a time…and I began braving boundaries.

I began with committing to a run during lunch, or dinner with friends without my smartphone, adding more change as the benefits became evident.

There were setbacks, but settling for what I had was no longer an option.

I pushed on through and braved the bigger changes: ending friendships and relationships that no longer benefited me; travelling; moving to Cape Town; even meeting my future husband.

With my life in balance, I felt alive, happy and proud of myself for having the courage to go after what I wanted.

I’d learnt to re-prioritise my time to make room for the things that were important to me. I’d learnt to say “no”. I’d learnt to value myself. I now actively protect my work-life balance and am happier and healthier than I’ve ever been.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What if i’m not a lawyer or legal professional? Can I still work with you?

Absolutely!! I coach a number of professionals outside of the legal sector. The Basic Balance session is designed to work across the professions – we are all human after all. The reason Braving Boundaries is currently focused on legal professionals is because it’s a sector which I feel is underserved in the coaching sphere and there is a lack of understanding around the benefits of coaching amongst the legal sector.

Where is the Basic Balance session held?

All Basic Balance sessions are held online via Zoom. Details of the Zoom forum will be provided to you once you sign up for a Basic Balance session. Further coaching sessions can be held in person (if you are based in Cape Town, South Africa) or online via Zoom.

What happens after the Basic Balance session is completed?

If we determine that we’re a good fit for the coaching process, you will then select a Braving Boundaries programme or package that best suits your needs. You’ll be sent further details on all programmes and packages after your Basic Balance session.

How much time is required?

The Basic Balance session is 2 hours long in total (90 mins plus 30 minutes) with as much or as little time as you wish to give to completing the questionnaire and homework tasks.

I already did a coaching programme. Will this still work for me?

Yes, it will. When you completed previous coaching programmes, you were at a different stage in your life. Circumstances change, people change, emotions change, goals and desires change. The Basic Balance session looks at your life right now. It seeks to help you clarify your current goals, overcome existing stumbling blocks and take immediate steps towards achieving the life you truly desire.

What if it’s not what I expect?

Ask yourself what your expectations are for the Basic Balance session. Are you expecting to feel happier and more informed about your desired life from 2 hours with me? I hope you feel that way as you leave the session. Are you expecting your life to be perfectly balanced and all your existing problems to have disappeared after 2 hours with me? Well, I’ll crush that expectation right now.

The Basic Balance session is the beginning of your journey towards a happier, healthier and more fulfilling life. It takes time to bring about change and be clear on what you want for yourself and your life. It takes even more time to overcome limiting beliefs and fears that have, for so long, prevented you from achieving what you truly want. So be kind to yourself. Enter the Basic Balance session with curiosity and an open mind, knowing that this 2 hour session is the beginning of you truly putting yourself first.

Why is the South African pricing different?

South Africa has a well-respected legal profession and highly skilled workforce, but due to poor economic decisions at the country level, salaries in the legal sector in South Africa are significantly lower than those in other legal centres in the world. In order to provide much needed coaching services to the legal sector in South Africa, the country in which I live, the prices have been proportionally adjusted to cater for South African salaries. It is within my right and discretion to reassess and amend this at a later date if I choose to do so.
